Racking the Apple and AV Corner: Mac Mini M4, Apple TV 4K, and WiiM
Somewhere between the switch stack and the patch panel, most homelab racks grow an AV corner. A Mac Mini running Plex or acting as a build machine. An Apple TV that used to live under the television and got drafted into the rack when the media closet consolidated. A WiiM streamer feeding the whole-house audio amp. None of these devices were designed for a rack — Apple in particular has never met a right angle it wouldn't round off — but all of them run better, cable cleaner, and look dramatically less like a pile of consumer electronics when they're mounted properly. This post walks the Apple and AV corner device by device: what each one actually measures, how much rack height it needs, and the thermal and signal quirks worth knowing before you commit slots.
The Mac Mini M4: small enough to rack, warm enough to plan for
The M4-generation Mac Mini shrank to a footprint of roughly 127 mm square and about 50 mm tall — small enough that two of them fit side by side in a 19-inch rack with room to spare, and small enough that a single unit slots into a 10-inch mini rack without drama. At 50 mm tall it will not fit a true 1U opening (44.45 mm); it's a 2U device, and pretending otherwise means grinding the case or starving the intake. Both are bad ideas.
The mount for this build:

Air is drawn in and exhausted through the ring around the base pedestal, which means the mount must leave the underside open. A flat shelf that blanks off the bottom of the chassis is the single most common mistake people make racking this machine. The Apple Mac Mini M4 / M4 Pro 10" Mini Rack Mount - 2U is built around that constraint — the Mini sits with its base airflow path clear in a 2U bay of a 10-inch rack, ports facing out where you can reach them.
For 19-inch racks, the Apple Mac Mini M4 / M4 Pro 19" Rack Mount - 2U (Modular) takes the modular approach: the Mini occupies one bay and the remaining width is available for companion modules, so the Mini can share its 2U with drive enclosures, a hub, or blank filler rather than wasting the other 300 mm of rack width. If the Mini is your home server, this is where the external SSD lives — short Thunderbolt lead, no dangling enclosure.
Two operational notes from running these headless. First, the M4 Pro variant under sustained load (transcoding, compiles) will spin its fan audibly — not loud by rack standards, but noticeable in a living-space rack; the base M4 stays near silent. Second, the power button moved to the underside corner on this generation. Mount it where you can still get a finger under the front edge, or resign yourself to pulling power to hard-reset. A purpose-built mount leaves the corner reachable; a deep universal shelf may not.
Apple TV 4K: the 1U guest that cares about line of sight
The Apple TV 4K (3rd generation, 2022) measures about 93 mm square and 31 mm tall, which makes it a genuine 1U citizen — one of the few consumer AV boxes that fits a 44.45 mm opening with clearance. The Apple TV 4K 3rd Gen (2022) 10" Mini Rack Mount - 1U holds it in a single slot of a 10-inch rack, and thermally this is a non-event: the 3rd-gen box is fanless, sips power, and vents through its base ring without ever getting more than warm.
The considerations here are signal, not heat. The Siri Remote talks Bluetooth, so racking the Apple TV behind a mesh door or in another room generally still works — but the remote also uses IR for controlling TV power and volume via HDMI-CEC fallback, and IR does not go through doors. If the rack lives in the same room as the display, keep the Apple TV's front face with line of sight through the rack opening. If it lives in a closet, do the CEC and eARC handshakes over HDMI and let the TV's own remote drive things, or use a control system that speaks network. Also budget for the HDMI run: at 4K120 or Dolby Vision bitrates you want a certified Ultra High Speed cable, and past about 3 meters passive copper gets marginal — an active or optical HDMI cable from rack to display saves a debugging evening. Buy the cable one length longer than the tape measure says; the drip loop at the rack face always eats more than you think.
WiiM: the streamer stack that took over the audio shelf
WiiM's streamers earned their spot in racks by being small, network-native, and actually reliable. Two of them cover most installs, and they have different rack profiles.
The WiiM Ultra is the flagship streamer-preamp — touchscreen front panel, roughly 205 mm wide and about 63 mm tall — which puts it firmly in 2U territory. The Wiim Ultra 10" Mini Rack Mount - 2U Height presents it in a 10-inch rack with the touchscreen facing out, which matters more than it sounds: the Ultra's screen is its now-playing display and volume control, and burying it defeats the point of paying for it. The Ultra runs cool for what it is; the sub-device to think about is whatever amplifier it feeds, which almost certainly wants more ventilation than anything else on this page.
The WiiM Pro and Pro Plus are the smaller pure-streamer boxes — roughly 140 mm square and under 42 mm tall, fanless, cool, and happy in a single slot. The Wiim Pro / Pro Plus 10" Mini Rack - 1U puts either one in 1U of a 10-inch rack. These are the boxes you scatter through a multi-room setup: one per zone, each pulling from the same NAS or streaming service, grouped in the WiiM app. Rack the one that feeds the main amp; the zone units can live near their amps.
One audio-specific note for racked streamers: keep the analog outputs' RCA runs short and away from the rack's power strip and wall-wart cluster. Line-level analog picks up hum from exactly the kind of dense AC wiring a rack concentrates. If the run from rack to amp is more than a couple of meters, prefer the digital outputs (optical or coax S/PDIF on the Pro/Pro Plus, plus HDMI ARC on the Ultra) and do the conversion at the amp end. Optical has the bonus of breaking ground loops, which are the number-one cause of "my racked audio gear hums and nothing else does."
Laying out the corner: who goes where
With the individual devices covered, the layout question: in a 10-inch rack, a plausible AV corner is Mac Mini M4 (2U), WiiM Ultra (2U), Apple TV (1U), and a WiiM Pro (1U) — six units total, which is most of a small mini rack. Ordering principles, from the top of the section down:
- Coolest and most-looked-at gear highest: the WiiM Ultra's screen and the Apple TV's IR window benefit from eye-level placement.
- The Mac Mini below them: it's the warmest device in this group, and its bottom-intake design means it cares about what's directly beneath it — give it either a vented panel or an empty slot below rather than another device's hot exhaust.
- Wall warts and power bricks at the very bottom, on a dedicated shelf or lashed to a rear rail. Every device on this page except the Mac Mini ships with an external or inline supply, and the AV corner is where power-brick sprawl gets out of hand fastest. Label each brick at both ends.
Cable-wise, the corner generates three families that want separation: Ethernet (fine anywhere), HDMI (stiff, wants gentle bends and no tension on the connectors — leave a service loop), and analog audio (route away from AC). Hook-and-loop throughout; HDMI connectors in particular do not tolerate the sharp cinch of a zip tie pulling sideways on the port.
The honest heat budget
None of this gear is a space heater. A base M4 Mini idles in the single-digit watts and peaks a few tens of watts; the Apple TV and WiiM Pro barely register; the Ultra adds a handful of watts. The whole corner at full tilt is well under 100 W — less than one enthusiast mini PC. In an open or mesh-fronted rack, convection handles it. The only scenario that needs actual thought is a sealed cabinet in a warm closet with an amplifier in the same box: amps change the budget completely, and that's the point at which a quiet 120 mm exhaust fan at the top of the cabinet earns its keep. Do that math on the amp, not on the Apple gear.
Wrap-up
The AV corner is the most personal part of a rack — it's the part guests actually see working. The mechanics are simple once the heights are known: the Mac Mini M4 is a 2U device with a bottom airflow path that must stay open, the Apple TV 4K is a true 1U box whose only demand is IR line of sight, the WiiM Ultra wants 2U with its screen facing out, and the Pro/Pro Plus tuck into 1U anywhere. Respect the Mini's intake, keep analog audio away from the power strip, spend properly on one long HDMI cable, and the pile of rounded-corner consumer boxes turns into a rack section that looks like it was always meant to be there.
