The Minisforum MS-01 did something unusual for a mini PC: it talked a lot of homelabbers out of buying used enterprise servers. Dual 10G SFP+, a real PCIe slot, three NVMe drives, and a desktop-class mobile CPU in a box the size of a thick paperback is a specification sheet that reads like a 1U server someone shrank in the wash. The MS-A2 followed with AMD silicon and more cores, and the MS-R1 rounds out the family as the newest sibling. All three share one inconvenient trait for anyone who wants a tidy rack: they are a little too tall to lie down in a 1U slot, and a little too capable to leave sitting on a shelf. This is a guide to putting them in a 10-inch rack properly — what the three machines are, why they land at 2U instead of 1U, how the networking shapes your build, and the mounting details a spec sheet never mentions.

What the MS-01, MS-A2, and MS-R1 actually are

Minisforum's MS line is best understood as mini workstations rather than mini PCs. Where a typical mini PC solders down a low-power laptop chip and gives you a couple of USB ports, the MS series carries a high-wattage mobile or desktop-class CPU, multiple NVMe slots, an expansion slot, and networking that belongs on a rack switch.

The MS-01 is the one that started the trend. It pairs an Intel Core H-series processor — the i9-13900H and i5-12600H were the common configurations — with two SFP+ cages for 10-gigabit networking, two 2.5-gigabit copper ports, USB4, and three M.2 NVMe slots, one of which doubles as a U.2 connector. It also carries a physical PCIe slot, which is the feature that pulls it out of mini-PC territory entirely: you can seat a low-profile card in it. In a homelab that means a machine that can be a Proxmox node, a virtualized firewall with real 10G interfaces, or a small all-flash storage box, without the power draw or the noise of a rack server.

The MS-A2 keeps the same idea and swaps the engine. It runs an AMD Ryzen HX-class processor with substantially more cores than the Intel part, which makes it the pick when you want raw compute for virtualization or compilation rather than the MS-01's networking-heavy balance. It keeps the fast networking and the expansion slot, so the external story is familiar even though the silicon inside is a different world.

The MS-R1 is the newest of the three, and the reason a bracket built for this family lists all three model numbers. What matters for mounting is that it shares the external chassis footprint of its siblings, so a single mount holds any of them. Why they are a 2U device, not 1U

Here is the specs-forward reason these do not go in a 1U slot, and it is worth understanding rather than taking on faith. A 1U opening under EIA-310-D is 44.45 mm tall. The MS chassis is roughly 48 mm tall on its shortest dimension — a hair over an inch and a half — which already exceeds a 1U opening before you account for the mount itself, for airflow, or for the fact that the rubber feet add height on top of that. So even laid on its broadest face, the machine cannot fit the 44.45 mm that 1U gives you.

That is why the mount is a 2U part. Two rack units give you 88.9 mm of vertical opening, and inside that the chassis sits with room for the bracket structure and for air to move around it. The networking is the whole point

You do not buy an MS-01 for the CPU. You buy it because it has two SFP+ 10G interfaces on a device that draws a fraction of what a 10G-equipped server would, and that changes what a small rack can do.

  • Dual 10G SFP+. Two SFP+ cages mean you can run a 10G uplink to your switch and still have a second 10G port for storage traffic, a direct link to a NAS, or a LAG. In a homelab with a single 10G-capable switch, an MS-01 is often the first device that actually saturates it.
  • Dual 2.5GbE. The two copper 2.5-gigabit ports are separate from the SFP+ cages, so a virtualized router build can put WAN and LAN on copper and keep the SFP+ pair for a fast internal path. That is four physical NICs before you touch the expansion slot.
  • The PCIe slot. A low-profile expansion slot lets you add whatever the four onboard NICs do not cover — more networking, an HBA, or an accelerator. It is the single feature that most separates the MS family from every other box this size.

The practical consequence for your rack is cabling. A machine with two SFP+ direct-attach cables, two Ethernet runs, and a power lead has five stiff cables leaving its rear face, and SFP+ DAC in particular has a bend radius that does not forgive a cramped rack. Mounting the unit so that rear face is presented at the side you patch from is not optional here; it is the difference between a rack you can service and a knot you fight. Thermal headroom in a 10-inch rack

The MS series runs hot by mini-PC standards, and it does so on purpose. That is fine on a desk with open air on every side. In a rack it needs thought.

The good news is that 2U of opening gives the machine more room than its own chassis height, so it is not sealed against a neighbor the way a 1U-crammed device would be. The things to watch:

  • Do not stack heat directly above it. Leave the slot above the MS breathing to room air, or put something cool there. A hot device sitting on top of a hot MS turns two manageable thermal loads into one that is not.
  • Mind the SFP+ transceivers. Optical and active-copper 10G modules add heat right at the rear of the unit. They are rated for it, but a rack with no airflow lets that heat pool exactly where the ports live. This is a point in favor of an open-front mount over a sealed cabinet.
  • Watch the cabinet, not just the box. As with any small enclosure, a sealed 10-inch cabinet with an MS-class machine inside will climb in temperature until the fan ramps and the quiet you wanted evaporates. A single low-speed exhaust fan high in the cabinet does more for sustained temperatures than anything you can adjust on the machine itself.

None of this is exotic. It is the discipline any dense device wants, just with more at stake, because the MS packs more watts into less space than the mini PCs it otherwise resembles.

Mounting them cleanly: the details the spec sheet omits

Two things about mounting these are worth knowing before you order anything, because both have caught people out.

The first is the rubber feet. The MS chassis ships with rubber feet on its base, and those feet have to come off for the machine to seat correctly in the bracket. This is not a defect in the mount — it is the few millimeters of foot height standing between the chassis and a flush fit. Peel or unscrew them before you mount, keep them in a labeled bag in case the machine ever goes back on a desk, and the unit drops into the Minisforum 2U rack mount the way it should. The second is material. These brackets are printed in PETG rather than a lower-temperature filament like PLA, specifically because the device runs warm and a rack is a warm place to begin with. It is a deliberate material choice, not a default, and it is the reason a plastic bracket is a reasonable thing to trust a several-hundred-dollar machine to.

A few more practical notes:

  • Rack screws are not included. The mount holds the machine; fastening the mount to your rails is on you. A 10-inch rack typically wants M6, or whatever thread your particular cabinet uses, so have the right screws and cage nuts on hand before mounting day.
  • There is a 19-inch version too. If this machine is going into a full-width rack rather than a 10-inch one, the same design exists for 19-inch rails. The 10-inch mount is the right call only if your rack is actually 10-inch.
  • Plan the power brick. Like most mini workstations, the MS runs from an external power supply, and that brick needs a home behind the rack. Decide where it lives before you mount, so it is not left swinging on its own cable.

Which of the three to buy

  • MS-A2 is the compute pick. The AMD core count pulls ahead when the job is packing VMs and containers, or anything that scales with threads, and it keeps the fast networking and expansion slot, so you give up little to gain the cores.
  • MS-R1 is the newest option, and worth checking current specifications against your needs at purchase time rather than assuming it maps exactly onto either sibling. What is certain is that it shares the footprint, so the bracket decision is already made for you.
