Mac Mini, Intel NUC, and HP/Dell/Lenovo Mini PCs in a 10-Inch Rack
Mini PCs are the second-most common thing in a homelab rack after the network gear, and they're never sold with rack ears. The Mac mini, the Intel NUC, the HP EliteDesk Mini, the Dell Optiplex Micro, the Lenovo ThinkCentre Tiny — every one of them was designed for a desk. Putting them in a rack means a bracket, and getting the bracket right depends on which model you have. Here's the practical guide to mounting all five families in a 10-inch rack.
Why a 10-inch rack for mini PCs at all
Mini PCs are typically 6–8 inches wide, well under the 200 mm of usable interior in a 10-inch cabinet. They fit two-across in a 19-inch rack, but in a 10-inch frame they sit alone in 1U with cable bend room behind them — and that's exactly the layout most homelabs want. One device per slot, easy to pull, easy to label.
The form factor also matches the noise profile. Mini PCs are quiet (sub-25 dB(A) at idle for the Apple silicon Mac mini, similar for fanless NUCs); putting them in a wide cabinet just amplifies airflow noise. A 10-inch cabinet keeps the rack volume low and the airflow paths short.
Mac mini (M1, M2, M4)
The Apple silicon Mac mini is the most popular non-x86 mini PC in homelabs. It's used for everything from a Plex server to a CI runner to a permanently-on macOS dev box for Xcode automation. The chassis is 197 × 197 mm — wider than most x86 minis but still well under 10 inches.
Two notes for rack-mounting:
- Don't block the bottom vent. The Mac mini intakes air through the bottom and exhausts through the rear. A bracket that supports the chassis from below must include vent cutouts; a tray-style bracket without them will throttle the CPU under sustained load.

The rear power button is recessed. If you mount the mini deep in the cabinet, you'll want the power button accessible. Most people end up using
caffeinateor wake-on-LAN instead of physically reaching the button, but it's worth thinking about during the first install.
Intel NUC
"NUC" covers a wide range — the original D54250WYK from a decade ago, the modern NUC 13/14, and now the Asus-branded ones. They share a roughly 4×4 inch footprint but vary significantly in height (40 mm thin to 100+ mm "tall" cases).
For the older D54250WYK and similar, the 10" Intel D54250WYK NUC rack mount is sized exactly for that chassis. For the modern NUC 12/13/14 generation, dimensions are similar enough that the same bracket works, but check the height — anything over 50 mm tall will eat into your 1U vertical clearance and may require a 1.5U or 2U bracket instead.
HP EliteDesk Mini (G3, G4, G5)
HP's EliteDesk Mini is the homelab king of the used market. You can find G3s for $80, G4s for $120, G5s for $200 — all with 8th/9th/10th-gen Core i5/i7, support for 32 GB or 64 GB RAM, and dual NVMe slots. They're 175 × 177 × 34 mm — short, square, and easy to bracket.
The 10" HP Elite/ProDesk G3, G4 & G5 mini PC rack mount fits all three generations in 1U. The mounting holes were unchanged across the G3/G4/G5 chassis, which makes the same bracket work — a small mercy from HP.
Dell Optiplex Micro (3000, 5000, 7000 series)
Dell's Optiplex Micro is HP's biggest competitor in the used homelab market. The 3060/3070, 5060/5070, and 7060/7070 share a chassis that's 36 × 178 × 182 mm — slightly thicker than HP's but otherwise comparable.
The 10" Dell Optiplex Micro rack mount fits the 3000/5000/7000 series in 1U. Worth noting: the newer Optiplex 7080 is a different chassis and uses a slightly different bracket.
Lenovo ThinkCentre Tiny (M710q, M720q, M920q, M10q)
Lenovo's Tiny line is the cheapest path into a Proxmox cluster — used M720q boxes regularly land at $60–$80 with 8 GB and a 256 GB NVMe. The chassis dimensions are 36 × 179 × 183 mm, and the M710q through M10q all share enough geometry to use the same bracket.
The 10" Lenovo ThinkCentre M720q, M920q, M710 & M10q tiny PC rack mount is sized for that chassis. If you're running a 3- or 4-node Proxmox cluster, the brackets stack: four units in 4U with a 1U fan tray below, and you have a serious cluster in a 10-inch cabinet.
Minisforum (MS-01, MS-A2, MS-R1)
Minisforum's MS-series is the new homelab darling — 2.5G + 10G LAN, U.2/M.2 in the same chassis, full-size desktop CPUs in some models. The chassis is wider than the HP/Dell/Lenovo minis, which is why it gets a 2U bracket: 10" Minisforum MS-01, MS-A2 & MS-R1 mini rack mount in 2U.
The 2U is for thermals as much as size — the MS-series runs hot under sustained load, and 2U gives the top fan room to breathe. Don't try to cram an MS-01 into a 1U slot with a custom bracket; you'll thermal throttle within minutes.

Three common ways to build a multi-node mini-PC cluster in a 10-inch rack:
4-node Proxmox (12U cabinet)
- 1U — gateway (Express or UCG-Fiber)
- 1U — USW-Ultra for 2.5G + SFP+
- 1U — vented blank
- 4U — 4 × ThinkCentre M720q in stacked 1U brackets
- 1U — vented blank

3-node Optiplex Proxmox + storage (10U)

Cabling and power
Mini PCs are surprisingly demanding on power-cable management. Each one ships with a 19V brick and a small barrel-plug cable. In a 4-node cluster you have 4 bricks and 4 short cables fighting for cabinet space. Two patterns that work:
- Stack the bricks. Find a 1U shelf, lay the bricks side by side, and run only the barrel-plug cables up to each device. This puts AC distribution in one place.
- USB-C-powered models only. Some newer minis (Mac mini M4, certain NUCs) accept USB-C PD. A single high-wattage USB-C charger can power two minis with USB-C cables, which is much tidier than two bricks.
For Ethernet: 0.5 m or 0.3 m patch cables save real space. The 1.5 m cables that come with most switches are wildly long for a cabinet where every device is 30 cm from the switch.
Wrap-up
Mini PCs make a 10-inch rack feel less like a "small homelab" and more like a real cluster. The cost is reasonable — used HP/Dell/Lenovo minis run $60–$200, brackets are a one-time spend, and the noise floor of an 8-node mini-PC cluster is lower than a single 1U rackmount server.
