For most of the last decade the homelab network question was binary: gigabit, which everyone had and nobody was excited about, or 10G, which meant SFP+, transceivers, warm switches, and a spend that only made sense if you were moving virtual machines around a NAS all day. There was no comfortable middle. Then 2.5GbE quietly arrived on the motherboards, the mini PCs, and the NAS units people were already buying, and the middle filled in. The general rule holds: a fanless device is silent, and silence is not the same as cool, so give it the clearance its lack of a fan quietly depends on.
