Intel NUC in a Rack: NUC8 Through NUC15 and the ASUS Era

The Intel NUC has been through eight-plus generations, one corporate handoff, and a small army of imitators, and through all of it the chassis has barely moved. The mainstream 4x4 NUC has kept a footprint of roughly 117 x 112 mm since the mid-2010s, which is either a triumph of industrial design discipline or evidence that nobody at Intel wanted to re-tool the extrusion line. Either way, it is excellent news if you want to rack one: a mount designed around that footprint fits a shocking range of machines, from a used NUC8 you bought for $120 to an ASUS-badged NUC 14 Pro that shipped last year.

This post walks the whole line — NUC8 through the current ASUS era — with an eye toward what actually matters when the machine goes horizontal into a 10-inch or 19-inch rack: chassis height, where the air goes in and out, and which generations are worth buying used in 2026.

The 4x4 footprint, and why it barely changed

Intel defined the 4x4 category in 2013 and then, to its credit, mostly left it alone. The width and depth stayed within a couple of millimeters across generations because the motherboard spec (roughly 101 x 101 mm, the UCFF board) stayed fixed. Cases changed finish, vent patterns, and lid material, but the mounting-relevant dimensions held.

Height is the variable that matters. Every mainstream generation shipped in two chassis:

  • Slim — the M.2-only chassis, roughly 37 mm tall. This is the one you want for racking. At 37 mm it clears a 1U opening (44.45 mm per EIA-310-D) with a few millimeters of breathing room above the lid.
  • Tall — the chassis with the 2.5-inch drive bay, roughly 51 mm. This one does not fit in 1U. It needs a 2U opening or a mount that deliberately gives up the extra height.

Here's the gotcha: sellers on the used market frequently do not say which chassis they're shipping, and the model-number suffix conventions (H for tall, K or i-only SKUs for slim, depending on generation) are inconsistent enough that you should just ask for a side photo. A tall NUC forced into a slim 1U mount is a return, not a modding opportunity.

Airflow: a blower, a rim vent, and one rule

Every NUC in this range cools itself the same way: a small blower pulls air through vents around the chassis rim and base, pushes it across a fin stack, and exhausts out the rear, next to the ports. Two practical consequences for racking:

First, do not block the rim. A mount that wraps the chassis in solid walls on all four sides is choking the intake. The open-frame approach — support the base, leave the perimeter exposed — is the correct geometry for this cooling design, and it is how the Intel NUC Slim PC's 19" Rack Mount - 1U (Modular) is shaped.

Second, rear exhaust means the hot air exits into your cable area. In a shallow 10-inch cabinet with a closed back, give the NUC the slot with the most open space behind it, or at minimum don't park a coiled power brick directly against the exhaust. The blower will keep the machine alive regardless — these things throttle gracefully — but sustained-load clocks are measurably better with a clear exhaust path.

Power bricks deserve their own sentence: every NUC ships with an external 19 V or 20 V brick, typically 65 W to 120 W depending on generation. Plan a shelf slot or velcro spot for it. The brick has no fan and tolerates being tucked away; the NUC does not.

Generation guide: what to buy used in 2026

NUC8 (Bean Canyon, 2018). The 28 W i5 and i7 SKUs with Iris Plus graphics were the enthusiast picks of their day and still make competent Proxmox or Docker hosts. Quad-core, dual-channel DDR4, Thunderbolt 3. Idle draw in the 5 to 10 W range makes a pair of these cheaper to run than one mid-tower. Prices on the used market are now firmly in impulse-buy territory.

NUC10 (Frost Canyon, 2019). Six cores in the i7, but Comet Lake graphics were a step back from NUC8. Fine as a headless host, unremarkable otherwise.

NUC11 (Panther Canyon / Tiger Canyon, 2021). The value pick right now. Tiger Lake brought Iris Xe graphics, PCIe 4.0 for the M.2 slot, and the Pro line added vPro and dual NVMe options. A slim NUC11 i5 is arguably the best used homelab node under $250 in 2026.

NUC12 / NUC13 (Wall Street Canyon / Arena Canyon, 2022-2023). Hybrid P+E core Alder and Raptor Lake silicon — meaningfully faster, slightly hungrier at load, same chassis story. NUC13 Pro was the last generation Intel shipped itself. Both remain expensive used because the fleet-refresh wave hasn't hit them yet.

The ASUS era: NUC 14 and NUC 15

Intel exited the NUC business in mid-2023 and licensed the line to ASUS, which has kept the mainstream 4x4 alive as the NUC 14 Pro and successors. The important racking news: ASUS kept the footprint. The NUC 14 Pro slim chassis remains in the same roughly 117 x 112 mm class at slim height, and it sits in the same 1U mounts as its Intel-badged ancestors. Meteor Lake and newer silicon brought better performance-per-watt and, on Pro SKUs, 2.5GbE — which matters in a rack, because it means the NUC finally matches the 2.5G access switches most homelabs have moved to.

Two cautions. ASUS also sells NUC-branded machines that are not 4x4s — the ROG NUC line is a different animal entirely and shares nothing dimensionally with the classic chassis. And spec sheets for the newest revisions should be read before assuming fit; the family resemblance is strong but a millimeter of extra lid height is the kind of thing you want to know before ordering a mount, not after.

The clones: GMKtec and the NUC-shaped economy

The 4x4 form factor outgrew Intel years ago. Beelink, GMKtec, Minisforum, and a dozen others ship machines in the same size class, usually at aggressive prices. They are not dimensionally identical to a NUC — vent placement, foot position, and height vary by a few millimeters each way — which is why they get their own mounts rather than borrowing the NUC's.

The GMKtec M3 NUC 2U Rack Mount (Modular) is the house example: the M3 packs 12th-generation Intel H-series silicon into a NUC-class box, and the 2U mount gives it the vertical clearance its taller chassis and livelier fan curve want. If you're choosing between a used NUC11 and a new clone at similar money, the NUC generally wins on firmware quality and Linux behavior; the clone wins on cores per dollar. Both rack cleanly, just not in each other's mounts.

Legacy corner: the D54250WYK keeps selling, and it makes sense

One more machine deserves a section because buyers keep proving it does. The D54250WYK is a 2013-era NUC — Haswell i5-4250U, DDR3L SO-DIMMs, mSATA storage — and mounts for it are among the steadiest sellers in the catalog. The logic holds up: these boxes are nearly free on the used market, sip single-digit watts at idle, and are entirely adequate as a Pi-hole, a tiny pfSense box, a print server, or a dedicated Home Assistant machine. The chassis predates the modern slim/tall convention, so it takes a dedicated mount: the 10" Intel D54250WYK NUC Rack Mount - 1U for mini racks, or the 19" Intel D54250WYK NUC Rack Mount - 1U (Modular) if it's going in a full-width cabinet alongside the grown-up gear.

If you have one in a drawer, the math is hard to argue with: a machine you already own, drawing less power than a phone charger, occupying 1U it shares happily with a keystone blank. Not everything in the rack needs to be impressive.

Racking patterns: 10-inch vs 19-inch

In a 10-inch mini rack, a slim NUC is a full-width tenant — the chassis plus mount consumes most of the 254 mm opening, and the power brick lives on a shelf above or below. A three-NUC Proxmox cluster in a 10-inch cabinet runs about 3U of compute plus a switch and patching, which is a complete, quorum-capable homelab in under 8U total.

In a 19-inch rack, a single NUC looks a little lost in all that width, which is what the modular mounts are for: the NUC takes one bay and the remaining width carries a second device or keystone passthroughs in the same 1U. That's the difference between a rack that holds four devices in 4U and one that holds four devices in 2U.

Either way, the ordering rule is the same: confirm slim versus tall before anything else. Height, not generation, is what determines fit.

Wrap-up

The NUC's dimensional stubbornness is the whole story. Eight generations, two owners, one footprint — which means one mount covers a NUC8 through an ASUS NUC 14 in slim form, the tall chassis needs 2U and honesty from the seller, the D54250WYK gets its own mount and keeps earning it, and the clones are welcome in the rack as long as they bring their own hardware. Buy the slim chassis, keep the rim vents clear, give the brick a home, and the 4x4 will quietly outlast whatever you rack next to it.
